The Fairplay Police Department is taking significant steps toward constructing a new station to address longstanding space limitations. Currently operating from a small basement within the Fairplay Town Hall, the department has faced challenges due to cramped conditions and inadequate facilities.
Sgt. Ronald Martinez Jr. highlighted the daily difficulties, noting that the existing space includes a modest office area, a bathroom, and two storage closets, all of which are insufficient for the department’s needs. At times, up to nine officers share this limited area, leading to operational inefficiencies.
Evidence storage has also been problematic, with some items temporarily stored outside due to lack of indoor space. Additionally, the absence of a private interview room has compromised the department’s ability to handle sensitive cases discreetly.
In a positive development, Fairplay has secured approximately $1.2 million through a grant supported by Colorado’s U.S. senators. While this funding does not cover the entire cost of a new facility, it represents a significant step forward. Officials are optimistic that with additional funding, the new station could be operational within about two years.
The proposed facility aims to provide adequate space for personnel, proper evidence storage, and private areas for interviews, thereby enhancing the department’s ability to serve the community effectively.
