The Fairplay Police Department has secured approximately $1.2 million through a federal grant to construct a new police station, addressing the significant space limitations of their current facility located in the basement of the Fairplay Town Hall.
Sgt. Ronald Martinez Jr. highlighted the challenges faced by the department, noting that the existing space comprises a small office area, a bathroom, and two closets, all of which are insufficient for the department’s needs. The cramped conditions have led to difficulties in storing evidence and conducting private interviews with crime victims. Martinez emphasized the necessity for a dedicated space to better serve the community and ensure the well-being of both officers and residents.
While the grant provides a substantial portion of the funding required for the new station, additional resources are still needed to complete the project. Town officials are optimistic that with further support, the new facility could be operational within approximately two years. The proposed station aims to include amenities such as a garage to protect patrol vehicles from the elements, thereby enhancing the department’s efficiency and response capabilities.
